Next Generation places strong value on its operators and long-standing crew members, many of whom have built their careers within the organization. Their experience and commitment contribute to operational consistency, safety, and overall performance in the field, and we are truly appreciative of all their contributions.

Founder
Calvin Archibald, P.Eng., built a second, passion-driven career rooted in forestry and a long-standing commitment to the future of the sector. Before retiring after 30 years with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, he worked as a civil engineer and served as the province’s Director of Equipment and Ferries.
Forestry has always been a personal interest for Calvin, and in 2000 he founded Next Generation as a way to turn that passion into meaningful action. What began as a side project grew into a focused effort to support responsible forestry, mentorship, and opportunities for those who will shape the industry in the years ahead. Calvin’s work spans advocacy, forest management, business development, and entrepreneurship, combining technical expertise with a deep respect for land, people, and community.
Throughout his career, Calvin has worked at the intersection of sustainable forest management and economic development, helping organizations, businesses, and communities build forestry practices that are resilient, responsible, and locally grounded. As a business owner and community builder, he is known for fostering collaboration, mentoring emerging professionals, and creating opportunities that strengthen both rural economies and forest ecosystems.
What sets Calvin apart is an unwavering focus on the next generation. Whether through advocacy, leadership, or mentorship opportunities, he is dedicated to ensuring forestry remains a viable, ethical, and inspiring field for those who will inherit it. His work is guided by the belief that strong forests and strong communities grow together, and that the decisions made today shape the landscapes and livelihoods of tomorrow.
Calvin focuses on the day-to-day financial and strategic planning aspects of Next Generation and is a co-owner alongside Mark. Together, they bring decades of experience in the forestry sector, with projects ranging from small private woodlots to large-scale government initiatives across Nova Scotia.

Co-Owner, Operations Manager
Mark Bannerman, is a Registered Professional Forester with a lifelong connection to working forests. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1999 with a degree in Forestry and began his career the traditional way, planting trees, piling pulp, and learning the realities of forest work from the ground up. That early hands-on experience continues to shape his practical, field-driven approach to forestry today.
For more than two decades, Mark has worked with private woodlot owners, industry partners, mills, and community stakeholders to support responsible forest management across Nova Scotia. He understands that every woodlot has unique goals and challenges, and he focuses on clear communication, realistic planning, and long-term results that align with landowner objectives. His experience spans harvesting operations, forest planning, stewardship, and operational management.
Mark has a strong interest in advancing forestry through innovation and technology. He integrates modern tools such as GPS mapping, LiDAR data, and precision forestry systems with real-world field knowledge to support informed decision-making and sustainable outcomes.
He is a member of the Registered Professional Foresters Association of Nova Scotia, Forest Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Forest Contractors Association. Mark also played a role in helping develop the framework that led to Forest Equipment Operators becoming a designated trade in Nova Scotia, strengthening professional standards within the industry.
Beyond forestry, Mark has demonstrated long-standing community commitment through 25 years of service with the Barneys River Fire Department. That same sense of responsibility, dependability, and service carries into his professional work with landowners and partners.
Mark has been with Next Generation since its inception and currently serves as Operations Manager and co-owner alongside Calvin. His leadership reflects a deep respect for the land, strong operational discipline, and a belief that sustainable forestry supports both healthy forests and resilient rural communities.

On-Site Mechanic
Grant began his career with Next Generation in 2003 as an equipment operator, gaining valuable hands-on experience in day-to-day forest operations. When the need arose for a full-time, on-site mechanic, Grant stepped into the role, recognizing that reliable equipment and timely repairs are essential to safe and efficient work in the woods.
Largely self-taught, Grant developed his mechanical expertise through experience, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic. Known for his reliability and willingness to tackle challenges, he plays a critical role in keeping operations running smoothly, often working behind the scenes to ensure crews can perform their jobs safely and effectively.
Grant’s ability to adapt, learn, and respond when it matters most highlights the importance of every role in forestry operations. His commitment and dependability make him a valued member of the Next Generation team and an essential part of operational success.

Future Forestry Leader
Jack is a second year BSc. Agricultural Business student at Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus with a strong passion for forestry and a commitment to balancing environmental responsibility with economic sustainability. While completing his Bachelor of Science degree, he works part time with Next Generation and is proud to be part of a team that values both stewardship and innovation within the industry.
Jack’s interest in forestry and agriculture began long before university, shaped by countless hours spent in the woods with his grandfather, Calvin. Walking woodlots, observing harvests, and learning how decisions on the land influence future growth sparked in him a deep respect for forests and the people who work in them.
At university, Jack serves as an executive member of the Agrology Club, where he helps organize on site learning experiences with agricultural businesses. Through his studies, leadership roles, and practical work, he continues to build the knowledge and skills needed to support a future where agriculture and forestry are sustainable, respected, and well understood.
